A specialised form of printing that originated in Madhya Pradesh has been practiced since the Indus Valley Civilization. This style of printing can be traced back to 1000 years where the Muslim Khatri’s ventured from Sind to Thar and Manawar in MP. In this, the fabric is treated with oxidised iron filings, alum, and alizarin. The entire process is purely manual and laborious that involves repeated washing, dyeing, and printing. The traditional motifs of this print included Nandana Mango, Tendu Plant, Leheriya, Buttis, and Florals

Kalamkari

An ancient Indian form of art, that is dated about 3000 years old- Kalamkari originated in Andhra Pradesh. Primary colours used in Kalamkari are red, yellow, blue, black. This is because Kalamkari prints usually represent motifs such as animals, birds, flowers, paisleys, god & goddesses from Hindu culture, and mythological stories.

There are two main styles of Kalamkari printing

  1. Srikalahasti: This style includes hand painting with a pen
  2. Machilipatnam: This style includes block printing

Sanganeri

Originated between the 16th and 17th centuries, this form of printing was first introduced in a small town of Rajasthan- Sanganeri. The name of the print hails from its origin. This style is usually donned over the off-white or white fabric using wooden blocks or screen-printing techniques. The common patterns of Sanganeri prints include flowers like rose, sunflower, lotus, marigolds, and lilies.

Bandhani

The art of Bandhani print is a highly proficient process that involves the dyeing of a fabric that is tied with treads at several points to create patterns on the fabric. These patterns include small circles, lines in vibrant colours like red, green, blue, yellow, brown, etc.
